Experience India

Touching down in an Indian airport is always a shock - the sounds, smells, noises and sheer number of people is an absolute bombardment of senses. Indian airports have seen some fantastic changes in recent years as the Indian Government have pumped money into everything ‘tourism’. Once you leave those sliding doors however, the real India takes a hold on you, thrusting you into a world so detached from your homeland, it is difficult not to wince.

That is not to say that India is a bad place to travel, far from it. Every time I have visited India I have left thinking, “That’ll be the last time”, but the truth is that India is an intoxicating place, rich in culture, heritage, fantastic food and even better people. It draws you back, opens up another chapter in its mystical book, and gives you the opportunity to explore its ancient wares and amiable inhabitants.

It all started on my first round-the-world trip. I had been to university and done some travelling before, but had always wanted to visit that spiritual place I had only read and dreamed about. It seemed a long way away but the more I read about the vibrant culture, the hippy hangouts and dramatic mountain vistas, the more I could not wait to board that plane to Mumbai.

As I left the plane in Mumbai airport, the first thing to hit me was the heat. I have never been particularly good in hot places (why was I in India again?) but this was like nothing I had ever experienced. I sweated my way to reclaim my luggage, passed through customs and made my way into the main hall.
“Sir! Sir! Taxi! Taxi!” came at me from all directions. I was being harassed from every angle, my pasty but flushed face and overinflated rucksack acting like a magnet for every taxi driver within a fifty-metre radius. They pushed and shoved, shouted louder and louder and occasionally made contact. I had read somewhere to keep my cool in this sort of situation, to play it easy, do not let them know your weakness.

They persisted, gradually wringing out every last drop of sanity from my baked brain. Suffice to say my game plan did not last for long and the stress got too much,
“Leave me alone!” I shouted at several decibels louder than a gaggle of about thirty hungry-for-new-blood taxi drivers, “I’m walking and I DO NOT need a taxi!”. I stormed outside into the oppressive sun and began marching down the highway leaving a melee of confused men in my wake.

It was at least three hundred metres before I stopped and had to admit defeat. I was young and arrogant, confident that I could overcome the heat and certain that I wouldn’t need anyone else’s help to get me to a hotel. I was wrong. Lightheaded and dehydrated, I flagged down a passing taxi (much to the disdain of the taxi drivers that were still watching me from the airport entrance) and told him to take me to the city centre.

It was then that the real India grabbed me and gave me a hot, sweaty bear hug as if to say, “Welcome to the world you’ve never seen and probably didn’t even know existed”. For anyone who has flown into Mumbai airport, they will say something similar. The contrast from the plush airport interior, to some of the worst depravation and poverty known to man, then back to multi-million dollar high-rises was startling. Is was like a huge, nasty caste-sandwich but the bread was too heavy and overwhelming, burying the unpleasant, unsightly filling. This was a real adventure

I was shown to a dodgy hotel by the taxi driver. I was drenched with sweat and extremely nervous about the next few months in this country of two halves. I lay under the pathetic fan and planned my next move.

Child-friendly holiday destinations

From the adrenaline fuelling to the explorative, children’s holidays need to be about adventure. Sitting on a beach reading a book just does not cut it. Although your children may be able to amuse themselves building sand castles or splashing about on an inflatable alligator for a day or two, in their minds this is not conducive to their dream holiday. You don’t have to forgo your holiday wishes just to appease your children mind you, but you do need to put them first. Here are two child-friendly holiday destinations that should make you happy too.

Sharm-el-Sheikh

White sand beaches, palm tress, resort hotels and sea water that comes in half a dozen shades of blue sound like the perfect adult holiday. These features do not sound like a child’s idea of heaven on the other hand. However, once you tell them they can snorkel or scuba dive around shipwrecks, see sharks and the full cast of Finding Nemo in the flesh they should start packing before you.

Another bonus is that almost all the hotels have kids’ clubs and babysitting facilities. Plus you can usually hire sports equipment such as windsurfers and dinghies for your children to play around with direct from your hotel. Otherwise they can get to grips with water sports for real with day or weeklong lessons. On The Beach offers cheap holidays to Egypt throughout the year and thanks to the repetitive climate – sunny and warm all the time – you can travel pretty much whenever you want. So you can find cheap holidays to Egypt over the May and October half term breaks.

Florida

Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World: your children should be pretty much drooling at the thought. Add to this a visit to the Everglades, swimming with dolphins in the Florida Keys, watching cars speed round the track at Daytona Beach and dreaming of going into space at the Kennedy Space Centre your children will be begging you to book on the next plane to Orlando. The average fly-drive holiday to Florida offers incredible value for money and gives you four wheels to explore at will.

But what’s there to do for mum and dad? Aside from all of the above, which we can pretty much guarantee you’ll enjoy just as much as your children will, there’s shopping and art in Miami, coastal cruises in Fort Lauderdale and spectacular beaches around Palm Bay.

Where does your Euro go furthest?

The top value European holiday destinations revealed

We all want to know where we will get more bang for our buck or, more accurately, our pound. Thankfully, there are organisations out there that have already done the research for us. Every year the Post Office draws up league tables of where our holiday money goes furthest. It does this by comparing the cost of eight key items in a variety of holiday destinations from Australia to Portugal. It also likes to find out how much you can get for your pound in key cities too. Here are some of the results for 2012.

The cheapest destination in Europe was Spain, followed by the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal. To buy a dinner for two, light refreshments, sun cream and five other items cost just £37.72 in Spain’s Costa del Sol. The same eight items cost £39.57 in the Czech Republic, £39.65 in Bulgaria, £45.57 in Hungary and £45.58 in Portugal. As you will probably agree, all of these prices look pretty appealing – a three-course evening meal for two in Lagos, Portugal was just £21.82; if that’s not a bargain then what is? On The Beach can help you continue to stretch your money as far as possible with its holidays to Portugal. You can travel to a wide range of resorts, throughout the year and for rather attractive prices.

Great value: The Algarve in Portugal

But it’s not all about Europe and holidays to Portugal, Spain and their ilk. 40 destinations throughout the entire planet were analysed. To discover the road to sunny harmony check out OnTheBeach’s holiday infographic. The number one spot was snatched by Sri Lanka. The same eight items there cost a mere £27.95 and we can bet there is a mean curry included in there. Aside from Mexico coming in fifth and South Africa pinching spot number nine, the rest of the top spots were taken by Asia, notwithstanding the aforementioned European destinations of course. Thailand was eighth, Vietnam 10th, Malaysia 11th and Indonesia was 12th.

But what about at the other end of the scale, where does you holiday money get pinched the tightest? In at number 40, making it the most expensive on the list, was Australia. The same eight items will cost more than four times as much Down Under as they will in Sri Lanka. Dinner for two etc will set you back £115.69. Once you’ve added the sheer expense of getting to Australia, you can understand why it’s a ‘once in a lifetime’ destination. Check out the full report here.

Currency Exchange Rates Ins and Outs

By: Nathan Lynch

Are you planning a trip abroad? If you so, you might want to know the current currency exchange rates so you can plan ahead for your financing needs. Your money is usually not worth the same in different countries as it is in the country where you live. It’s a good idea to know the value of your dollar before you take your trip, as you will have to hand it over to be converted when you reach your destination. You don’t want to be shocked when you get there and realize the possibility of an enormous difference in monetary value, and that your money isn’t worth close to what is in your own country. Then again, it may end up that you are happily surprised upon discovering that your money is worth double or triple in the country you are going to be visiting than what it’s worth at home.

A really good source of information for currency exchange rates and other international financial services is www.currencysource.com. They offer information and services for business necessities like buying foreign currency, transferring funds to an overseas bank account, or paying an international seller’s invoice.

On a personal level, you can send international wire transfers to family or friends abroad, pay overseas college tuitions or put a deposit down on a vacation rental in a foreign country. Another great feature they offer is a currency converter right on their home page. You can find out what your money’s worth in almost any country around world in just a few seconds!

Another reason for being aware of currency exchange rates is for purchasing over seas stocks. When you purchase stock in another country, but are based in your own country, as in online trading for instance, your dollar value is probably going to be different than what it is in the country where you are investing. You will want to be informed of the exact currency exchange rates so that you know precisely how much you are paying for that stock. It may seem like a good price, until you convert your dollars. You may end up paying much more than the stock is actually worth, defeating the whole purpose of investing.

Five Day Trips For a Holiday in Cala Galdana

By: Brenda Jaaback

Cala Galdana, known as the “Queen of the Calas”, is perhaps the most beautiful (and most photographed) resort in Menorca. With a perfect sheltered beach of golden sand, ringed by steep cliffs and dotted with villas, Cala Galdana is a popular choice with couples and families looking for place to relax in the sun on one of the best beaches on the island.

If sun, sand and beautiful surroundings are all you are after, there’s no need to leave the resort, but if you’d like to do a little more on your Cala Galdana holiday, here are five outstanding day trips to go on…

Wander the Streets of Ciutadella

Menorca’s cities are often unfairly overlooked by visitors who head straight for the beach resorts. But if you leave the comforts of your Cala Galdana villa and head over to the west coast city of Ciutadella for a day, you’ll be amply rewarded – with its 17th century architecture and narrow winding streets, it is the architectural delight of Menorca. Wandering through the streets and enjoying the sights is a great way to idle away a day, and some of the best restaurants and nightlife on the island are also to be found in Ciutadella.

Dance the Night Away in the Caves of Xoroi

A holiday in Cala Galdana can be the perfect way to relax, and the bars and restaurants are excellent for a quiet evening out. But party goers looking for a more active nightlife should head over to the resort of Cala’n Porter, where the Caves of Xoroi is the main attraction. This bar and disco, built into the natural caves overlooking the sea, is the most exciting place to drink and dance in Menorca.

Go to the Top of Mount Toro

Mount Toro is the highest point in Menorca. It may only 1174 feet above sea level, but what it lacks it prominence it makes up for in spectacle; the summit provides stunning views out over the entire island, and there is also a 17th century church on the top of the mountain. You can drive or walk to the top Mount Toro, and a day trip to the mountain is a great way to stretch your legs after a few days spent relaxing on the beach.

Marvel at Naveta des Tudons

Menorca is famed for its unique navetas, prehistoric stone structures that are scattered across the island, shaped like upturned ships. Although they are generally believed to be burial chambers, little is truly known about them. History lovers on holiday in Cala Galdana should make a day trip to Naveta des Tudons, the largest, best preserved and most famous naveta on the island, located just outside Ciutadella.

Play Golf at Son Parc

Golf fanatics on a holiday to Cala Galdana will no doubt be eager to practice their game while on vacation. Menorca only has one golf course, Son Parc, but what the island lacks in diversity it makes up for in quality. Son Parc, located 30km from Cala Galdana is a delightful 18 hole level golf course, suitable for beginners and expert players alike.

Windsurfing in Spain

By: Michael J

When you travel to Spain for your holidays you will always have an idea of what recreational activities you will want to participate in. If Windsurfing in Spain is one of those activities that interests you then you are in luck.

In Spain there are a number of locations that cater for Windsurfing. In the region of Murcia by the world famous La Manga Club there is a small sea separated from the ocean itself known as the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor is a very calm watered environment when you can practise your skills in your attempt to master Windsurfing in Spain. With the Mar Menor located beside the Mediterranean Ocean, you as a windsurfer have two choices of where you can go.

If you are new to windsurfing then it is suggested that you go to a school and learn via them. There are a number of schools all along the Spanish coasts that offer you lessons to be able to learn all the skills you will need to operate the equipment. Windsurfing in Spain can be a challenging to get the hang of, however is very rewarding once you can stay up and riding the waves.

The Mar Menor is the best place to start if you are a rookie. The Mar Menor is located right next to La Manga Club and is known for its sailing. If you are new to windsurfing with no experience then starting here is the best thing to do. Even if you are experience then this location can cater for you. The Mar Menor can accommodate all levels of windsurfers from beginners to advanced users. It you do decide to go down the route of a school rather than just hiring out the equipment and learning as you go then the school is likely to bring you to the Mar Menor to start with. The conditions are a lot more forgiving for the newbie, with lighter winds and shallower waters.

Once you are equipped with all the skills you need to stay upright then windsurfing on the open ocean is not uncommon. The Mediterranean Ocean is right next to the Mar Menor and can challenge you a lot more. The winds off the coast are a little fiercer and depending on the time of day can be too dangerous for a newbie. Experienced windsurfers may find the sea a lot more challenging and prefer to spend their time there over the Mar Menor. Windsurfing in Spain Schools will advised you if and when you can jump into the sea and take more of a challenge on.

For a windsurfer, Spain does not only offer schools to allow you to further you skills but also have a range of shops that will repair your gear or supply you with the top of the range latest equipment. The latest windsurfing gear does not come cheap so like any shops you might encounter you should shop around looking for the best deals you can find. If you do not wish to buy any equipment then there are some shops, included Windsurfing in Spain schools that will rent out everything you need on a hourly to daily rate. If you hire out your own equipment then you can just go straight to the Mar Menor and give windsurfing a go!

Family Holidays in London

A family that can’t find something to do in London isn’t looking very hard. London is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the entire world. From the abundant parking at Heathrow to the great family attractions, the entire holiday experience in London is convenient. After departing the expansive Heathrow car parking lot, London offers abundant family entertainment that’s easy to find, fun and exciting.

Kids love to see and do new things. The Science Museum has hands-on exhibits that will fill their curious minds with scientific notions and images. It’s a quick bus ride to Kensington from the Heathrow parking lot. From there, it’s just a stone’s throw to two other great museums, the Natural History Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum. These museums are a great start to a family holiday, especially if it’s raining after departing the airport parking at Heathrow

Kids never tire of the London Dungeon on the South Bank. It’s sure to give them the creeps. The 14 separate exhibits feature professional actors and three dizzying rides. The London Dungeon has so many shows that a family can stay there for an entire day. While on the South Bank, check out the Golden Hinde, a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s 16th-century ship. The HMS Belfast is nearby too. Families can thoroughly explore this retired World War II cruiser.

Some families prefer a more sedate holiday. Those folks will enjoy a leisurely picnic at Hyde Park. There’s a park on Hampstead Heath for youngsters, boating on The Serpentine Lake and kite flying on Parliament Hill. Everybody has fun at the nearby Hampton Court Palace maze. Hackney City farm has pigs and chinchillas for the kids to behold up close and personal. The London Zoo and Gorilla Kingdom are also great family entertainment.

Of course, everybody wants to see London’s most famous sites like London Bridge, Windsor Castle, the London Aquarium and the London Eye. This giant observation wheel offers a spectacular birds-eye view of London.   For those families who prefer a more nautical theme, try the Duck Tours. The refurbished amphibious vehicles provide a dramatic tour on land and down the Thames River. These were the actual vehicles used in the massive World War II D-Day military operation.

Culturally speaking, London has some wonderful attractions, including the Tate Modern Museum, the Nautical Museum, the London Film Museum and the Shakespeare Globe Theatre.

Families that are thrill seekers will enjoy Thorpe Park. It is home to adrenaline-filled rides like The Swarm, Europe’s wildest winged roller coaster. The Colossus roller coaster has ten vertical loops and the U.K.’s only quadruple corkscrew. The amazing Saw ride features a 100-foot vertical drop after three separate inversions at 55 miles per hour.

Any family would be hard pressed to do everything that London has to offer. That doesn’t stop families from all over the world from trying. Even if they lose the battle, they have a great time trying.

Five Items You Must Check on Your Travel Insurance Policy

By: Patrick Chong

So you’ve booked your holiday, filled in your EHIC card and paid for your travel insurance. You’re all sorted right? Well you may want to check again. Here’s our list of important things that you should remember to check for when buying holiday insurance.

How many children are covered in your holiday insurance policy?

If you’ve got more than one child then purchasing a family holiday insurance policy can seem like a great way to save money. However, you may want to double check that your whole family is included in your travel insurance policy. Most insurance policies only cover the standard family unit of 2 children, so if you’re a family of five or more then be sure to read the small point as you may need to purchase an additional travel insurance policy for one or more of your brood.

Does your travel insurance include personal liability?

It may sound scary but what if someone is injured and it’s your fault? In today’s society of compensation claims and lawsuits it’s easier to be sued then you may think. If you don’t have a comprehensive travel insurance cover then you’re liable to pay your own legal costs and these can quickly mount up.

Does your holiday insurance cover all the sports and activities that you want to do?

You may be a regular GI Joe that swims with sharks on a Saturday and sky dives on a Sunday. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make you the regular tourist and as a result many holiday insurance companies won’t cover you. This doesn’t mean that you should tone your holiday down if bungee jumping breaks are you’re kind of thing. Instead make sure the company that offers your extreme sports have their own insurance policy and that you’re covered on it. Of course if you really are GI Joe then you may want to look at getting a more comprehensive holiday insurance policy.

Does your travel insurance policy provide sufficient cover for any medical eventuality and repatriation?

So you’re pleased as punch because you not only remembered to buy your travel insurance, but you actually got a really good deal in your local supermarket when you nipped in to buy some tuna last week. But take another look at it; is it really that good a deal? How much cover does it give you? Some cheap holiday insurance companies only cover up to £2,000 in medical expenses and to be honest this is pretty rubbish. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that the level of cover should be £1 million for Europe and £2 million for the rest of the world.

Does the policy cover a full refund of your costs if the trip is cancelled or cut short for any reason?

It’s a scenario that doesn’t bear thinking about. But imagine that it’s the day before you’re dream holiday, you’ve packed the ubiquitous wardrobe of summer brights and your fake tan is booked in for the afternoon. Then all of a sudden you get the dreaded call, no it isn’t your mother checking that you’ve packed enough clean underwear. It’s the travel company and your holidays been cancelled. So what do you do? Well there’s little you can do unless your travel insurance policy covers a full refund of the costs and if it does then excellent, book yourself a last minute deal straight away and use the extra cash to treat yourself to an upgrade.
